Task 2: Roles and Responsibilities (the RASCI matrix)
This task is about making sure you’ve thought through all the roles and responsibilities involved in a project, and assigned them to named individuals. It relates to our section on Getting teams working together.
A common tool for this is the RASCI matrix (a slightly simplified version is sometimes called a RACI matrix).
Step-by-step
- Have a look at our template and familiarise yourself with it..
- Working as a group, make a list of all the higher level areas of responsibility that will be required on a project are listed. Below are some examples from one of our projects, which should help clarify the level of granularity you need.
- Group the tasks into task areas and then business areas, as above.
- Fill out the RASCI template with these task groups.
- Decide on your grouping (Ie, by organisation, as above, or by individual if you are able). List each person or group across the top (where you have Person A, Person B etc in the spreadsheet)
- Go through each one and decide the level of responsibility for each person or group for each task.
- Reflect as a group on the following questions: Were there any areas that were difficult to fill in? Why? Was there anything else about the exercise you found difficult or surprising? If you were working with external stakeholders, would you need to involve them in this process? If so, how would you do this? How would you adapt this to make it more relevant to your own project?
