Task 3: Coding qualitative responses

This task is about using the qualitative data you’ve gathered in the form of field notes from the previous 2 tasks and coding it to find insights that relate to your research questions. This task is related to our section on Analysis of qualitative insight.

Step-by-step
  1. Look across your field notes and feedback on your product and create bottom-up codes for your data (refer to our section on Analysis of qualitative insight)
  2. Identify any recurring patterns and themes and think through what insight this gives you.
  3. As you get additional feedback through research, reflect on the themes that are emerging and what codes can be used to structure your research findings.
  4. As a group, reflect on the following questions. What did you learn from this activity? Was anything surprising? Or particularly challenging? What would you do differently if you were to do this again?
  5. Outside the classroom, download and run the trial version of NVivo and input your data into the software. This will allow you to structure and manipulate your data.
