Task 3: Coding qualitative responses
This task is about using the qualitative data you’ve gathered in the form of field notes from the previous 2 tasks and coding it to find insights that relate to your research questions. This task is related to our section on Analysis of qualitative insight.
Step-by-step
- Look across your field notes and feedback on your product and create bottom-up codes for your data (refer to our section on Analysis of qualitative insight)
- Identify any recurring patterns and themes and think through what insight this gives you.
- As you get additional feedback through research, reflect on the themes that are emerging and what codes can be used to structure your research findings.
- As a group, reflect on the following questions. What did you learn from this activity? Was anything surprising? Or particularly challenging? What would you do differently if you were to do this again?
- Outside the classroom, download and run the trial version of NVivo and input your data into the software. This will allow you to structure and manipulate your data.
